Agra celebrates Taj Mahal's newfound global status

Agra, July 21, 2007 - School children and residents of Agra participated in a rally here on Friday to celebrate the inclusion of the Taj Mahal in the latest Seven Wonders of the World list.
"Taj Mahal has come out first among the seven wonders. Agra should also come to number one," said Swagini Singhal, a school girl.
Anjula Singh, Agra’s Mayor, urged the Central and the State Governments to develop the city into a world-class tourist destination.
Authorities have sought to keep the area around the Taj Mahal pollution free but this problem has not been completely removed.
Homes, businesses and factories are left without electricity for hours every day, forcing many to depend on kerosene-operated generator sets, which number 40,000, for their power needs.
Glass and other factories in neighbouring towns are being persuaded to use gas instead of coke in their furnaces.
Environmentalists and historians, worried that the soot and fumes, have raised an alarm to save the monument.
Nearly 20,000 tourists walk through the monument’s manicured lawns every day. (ANI)
