Amarnath pilgrims among 10 injured in grenade attack
MIL/ANI, Jul 21, 2007.

Srinagar, July 21, 2007 - At least 10 people, including nine Amarnath pilgrims, were injured when militants lobbed a grenade at a community kitchen in Pahalgam in South Kashmir on Saturday.

The rebels threw a grenade towards a 'langar' (community kitchen) at a gurudwara near Pahalgam police station in Anantnag District at around 1 p.m., police said.

Eight sadhus (hermits), a pilgrim and a driver of State Road Transport Corporation were injured.

This is the second attack in less than a week targeting Amarnath pilgrims. Sixteen people, including some pilgrims, were wounded in a grenade blast near the main entrance of the Baltal Base Camp on Tuesday.

Undeterred by militant strikes, hordes of pilgrims headed to Amarnath from Jammu on Friday.

"These kinds of attacks often take place, but will not affect the faith of devotees,” said Sourav, a pilgrim.

"I feel such attacks only reinforce the faith of people and motivate more pilgrims to visit these holy shrines," said Viran Kumar, another pilgrim.

Security has been further beefed up on the pilgrimage route after the blasts.

In 2002, eight pilgrims were killed in an attack on the Nunwan camp in Pahalgam.

Every year tens of thousands of pilgrims trek along a treacherous mountain track to the shrine, which is located at a height of 3,800 metres (12,700 feet). (ANI)
