BJP suspends Uma Bharti from the party for 6 years

MIL, Nov 10, 2004

New Delhi - BJP issued direction on Wednesday to suspend Uma Bharti from the primary membership for 6 years and also removed her from the post of General Secretary of the party.

Uma Bharti demanded disciplinary action against some leaders because they gave wrong briefing to the media against her. She said, "Four-five people in this hall who do the off the record briefings (against her) which appeared as headlines and people like here were not similarly capable. So we are forced to save our honor by being compelled to speak on record and that is being branded as in-discipline," she said and walked out ignoring the appeal by Rajnath Singh and Haryana MP Kishan Singh Sangwan for restraint.

These leaders, she said, "had no work because they are in Rajya Sabha and do off the record briefing". "They do not want anything to be discussed."

As she ranted against her detractors, Advani intervened in a bid to stop her outburst saying, "I have said this matter is being closed. Closed means closed for all."

Mr. L.K.Advani dismissed her demand for discussion the issue. As a result, she walked out of a party meeting. Her action irked the party leadership and they decided to remove her from the Primary Membership and issued directions accordingly.
