Police fired and used tear gas on protesters in Srinagar
MIL/Agencies, Jul 7, 2007.

Srinagar: July 07, 2007 – Over 700 people had gathered here near the grand Jamia Mosque after Friday prayers to stage protest against rights abuse by troops as well as police; the protesters shouted “Aallah-hu-Akbar”, down with Indian forces” To disperse them, the Police fired warning shots in the air and used tear gas.

The Police alleged that the crowd had thrown stsones over them and as a precautionary measure they had to use tear gas shells. As a result of force by the Police four people were injured and detained over a dozen people for interrogation.

In fact, the trouble developed as a strike called by separatist leaders over the issue closed shops and businesses that made the streets to look deserted during the shutdown, called by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, the regional leader.

Police and the army in the revolt-torn Himalayan state in the past have been accused of murdering innocent civilians in staged gun battles and passing the victims off as separatist militants to earn rewards and promotions, as per Reuters.

Earlier this year, authorities charged over a dozen policemen and soldiers with killing at least two civilians in separate fake gun battles, claiming the civilians were militants.

The killings triggered widespread protests across the Muslim-majority region where officials say more than 42,000 people have been killed after a revolt against Indian rule broke out in 1989. Human rights groups put the toll at about 60,000.

Indian authorities deny any systematic rights violations in Kashmir and say all reports are investigated and those found guilty are punished, as per Agency reports.
