Flood Tragedy of Uttarakhand: June 30, 2013 – News n Analaysis by Dr. Raj Baldev, Cosmo Theorist, on the flood tragedy of Uttarakhand and a heavy death toll, which could be avoided. What do you say about it?
It is not the matter how many people were killed in Uttarakhand flood tragedy, now one estimate talks of 10,000, some say less and some say even more than 10,000 pilgrims died or perished by drowning or by burial under the debris.
This tragedy simply shows the negligence or carelessness both on the part of the govt. and the people who are rushing without any consideration to warnings issued from time to time, the Govt. and the people, both, took it as a routine affair, and the horrible picture is before us.
The real point in issue is how to avoid such tragedies in future. The health minister Surinder Singh Negi, while speaking to IANS on Sunday, did not object to speaker’s claim that 10,000 people were killed in the rain-flood tragedy, rather he also said it was an “estimate” as many bodies are still buried under mounds of debris in the Kedarnath valley area.
His words to the effect are:
“State assembly speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal has simply given an estimated figure. It is not confirmed. At the moment, it is only an estimate. It can go down or rise above, hence too early to give the exact number of deaths in the tragedy that has completely devastated the state.”
State Assembly Speaker had told reporters that during his earlier tour of the flood-devastated areas of the state he had put the death toll at 5,000-6,000.
“But after hearing accounts of the people coming down from the mountains and that of people calling me up and seeing the piles of bodies, I feel the toll could be well over 10,000.”
On the ather side the Govt. of India does not want to go beyond 900 peoiple as per Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde.
The govt, estimate is always less, there is nothing to be surprised, this time the govt. seems to be hiding the actual number of deaths.
