India rules out any demilitarization and troop reduction in J&K
MIL/Agencies, Jun 19, 2007.
New Dehil: June 19, 2007 (Tuesday)- India’s Defence Minister A K Antony said on Monday that demilitarisation and troop reduction in Jammu & Kashmir is ruled out.
The Minister's statement is probably based on the two committees constituted by the Centre to assess the situation of the reconfiguration of security forces in the militancy-hit state, who gave such a conclusion.
"The two committees are functioning. They are assessing the situation. Whatever decision has to be taken will depend on professional advice ... as of now there is no proposal of demilitarisation," Antony told reporters on the sidelines of the inaugural day of the two-day conference of Unified Commander's-in-Chief Conference here.
The statement of Antony might create more distance between; the Congress from its ally PDP, which has been holding rallies across the valley demanding troop reduction and withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, as per PTI.
