New Delhi : June 04, 2007 – The Gujjars in West Indian state Rajasthan are now blocking all entry points to New Delhi today practically sealing the national capital all over. All important roads are blocked; the commuters are facing serious problems to move to and fro. The Army is patrolling at certain strategic points.
The protests had started the movement on last Tuesday, when the Gujjars, who had blocked highways in West Indian state Rajasthan, clashed with police, leaving dozens dead and over a hundred injured.
The Gujjars have been demanding the Scheduled Tribe status from the government so that they can enjoy special privileges.
Hundreds of agitators on Monday blocked key roads linking the capital, leading to traffic jams at all entry points to New Delhi.
All Indian media channels reported that security has been beefed up at roads along the Delhi border with neighboring states and those Capital-bound vehicles were being diverted to alternate routes. Television channels flashed pictures of Army patrolling several areas.
All television channels also showed pictures of protesters damaging buses, pelting police with stones, blocking highways and burning effigies of the Rajasthan Chief Minister. The government is trying to resolve the crisis but there has been no solution in sight so far.
