G8 nations warn Iran over nuclear enrichment
MIL/Agencies, Jun 1, 2007.
Potsdam, June 1, 2007 - The Foreign Ministers of the G-8 nations have seriously warned Iran that they would support action against it as agreed in the latest U.N. Security Council resolution if Tehran continued to ignore its international obligations, particularly suspension of all enrichment related activities.
In a statement issued at the conclusion of the two-day meeting here, the Foreign Ministers of the United States, Canada, Japan, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Russia and Germany deplored that Iran has expanded its enrichment programme as evidenced by the IAEA Director General's latest report to the Security Council.
The foreign ministers did not elaborate what measures are contemplated, but they expressed their disappointment over Iran's failure so far to engage on the proposals contained in the latest U.N. resolution, which included cooperation with Iran on civil nuclear energy, legally-binding guarantees on the supply of nuclear fuel and wider political security and economic cooperation.
"Such Iranian engagement would provide a means to address the international community's concerns while taking account of Iran's legitimate interests in building a modern civilian nuclear programme for energy diversification purposes," the statement said.
The foreign ministers reiterated their "profound concerns" over the proliferation implications of the Iranian nuclear programme and said they remained committed to a negotiated solution which would address the international concerns over Iran's nuclear programme and were united in their commitment to see the proliferation implications resolved, it said.
