Rushing of New Rape Law in India: January 1, 2013 – News n Analysis by Dr. Raj Baldev, Cosmo Theorist, on the remarks of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who in her New Year message, called for amendments in existing laws to allow chemical castration for rapists and demanded a death penalty for them.
So far the law of chemical castration is concerned, God Believers Association (GBA), an NGO, that not only promotes human rights and seek justice for the victims on national and international levels,but also serve the cause of World Peace, help healthy global environment on the earth,on Tuesday assailed the view of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa for recommending a law for chemical castration.
So far other recommendation of death penalty is concerned; GBA leaves it to the lawmakers that too after public opinion obtained through national referendum.
No doubt that the incident of a 23 year old medical student in Delhi was gang raped in a bus and they tried to murder the girl and that shook the nation.
GBA has all sympathies with the girl and the protesters but when the culprits have been arrested and to be tried by the competent court, the political leaders should not try to influence the working of the court or how much punishment they would pass against the culprits.
Tamil Nadu government has probably become the first state to initiate immediate measures that could aim curb such cases of crimes against women and she has called for a Chemical Castration, which, in my opinion, is a hasty step on her part to think like that.
The Parliament can’t play with the people independently by changing the law by their own. They must consult the masses through a referendum since it is the matter that concerns them directly.
The issue has cropped up now before the final elections, hence the public opinion is a must before enacting it as a law. (Continued on Next Page)
