Mayawati may become Chief Minister of UP
MIL/Agencies, May 11, 2007.

May 11, 2007 – BSP has come up and set to emerge the single largest party in Uttar Pradesh holding the lead in 204 of the total 402 seats. This trend is based on the counting of votes in the assembly elections. Mayawati has thus appeared set for a fourth term as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Wooing Brahmins in a big way to add to its vote base of Dalits and Muslims, the BSP surged ahead in 204 seats, followed way behind by the ruling Samajwadi Party that was leading in 98 constituencies, as per PTI reports.

BSP has formed the majority and Mayawati therefore needs none to support to form her govt.

The BJP, which had hoped to add to its string of poll victories in Punjab, Uttarakhand and Mumbai, did not do well as projected by exit polls and was leading only in 58 seats.

The trends indicated a better showing by the Congress, ahead in 27 seats, while independents and others were leading in 25 seats. The state assembly has strength of 403 and election was countermanded in one seat due to the death of a candidate.

Victory celebrations begin Victory celebrations began at the Mall Avenue residence of Mayawati, where party workers distributed sweets among themselves and to hordes of journalists present there.

Several ministers in the Mulayam Singh Yadav cabinet were trailing in their constituencies though the Chief Minister was leading in Gunnaur and Bharthana seats.

Prominent among ministers who trailed in their seats were Narad Rai, Yogesh Pratap Singh, Arvind Singh Gope, Harishankar Tewari, Mayankeshwar Saran Singh, Raja Ram Pandey, Vinod Kumar Singh, and Shardanand Anchal.

Those who were leading included Minister Azam Khan, Ambika Chaudhary, Shivpal Singh Yadav, Naresh Agarwal and Ashok Bajpai.

Vidhan Sabha Deputy Speaker Rajesh Agarwal and Congress Legislature Party leader Pramod Tewari were ahead in their seats while senior BJP leader Lalji Tandon trailed in Lucknow West constituency.

Senior Congress leader Jagadambika Pal, Apna Dal president Sonelal Patel, senior BJP leader Om Prakash Singh, state BJP president Kesri Nath Tripathi and UPCC president Salman Khursheed's wife Louis were also trailing.
