Media Status at Risk: November 28, 2012 , News n Analysis by Dr. Raj Baldev, Cosmo Theorist, on the ill – fate of Zee News editor and business head, Sudhir Chaudhary and Zee Business editor and business head Sameer Ahluwalia? They are remanded to police custody for two days? What is the reaction of Zee News?
So far courts in India are concerned, they are respected and looked upon with high esteem, Judiciary is one of the three pillars of democracy, and hence nothing can be commented.
All journalists across the country pay due regard to the Judiciary and I am one of them. Still the right of Zee News is very much there to shed their inner feelings whether the allegation is correct or manipulated.
The two journalists of Zee News on Wednesday were remanded in police custody for two days by the order of a local court after the crime branch of the Delhi police pressed that they wanted to question them to dig out the alleged “larger conspiracy” in the extortion case involving Congress MP Naveen Jindal.
Zee News has denied the allegations and countered that the arrests were in fact an attempt to humiliate the media on the basis of a fraudulent and contrived complaint.
There was an allegation in the complaint lodged by Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) on October 2 that two journalists from Zee News had demanded Rs. 100 crore in the committed advertising form and in return the channel promise to drop an investigation; no negative reporting from their side in the case of allotment of coal blocks by the UPA government.
Zee has denied the allegations and said the arrests are an attempt to gag the media on the basis of a fraudulent complaint.
Both journalists of Zee News were booked under sections 384 (extortion), 420 (cheating), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of the IPC. Their names were mentioned in the FIR filed by the HR head of JSPL.
The Media world is to wait and see the results of the Police Interrogation.
