Black Flags greeted Arjan Singh, Union Minister in Ranchi MIL/Agencies, Apr 18, 2007. Ranchi, April 18, 2007 - Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Pariashad activists showed black flags to Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh while he was delivering a convocation speech at Ranchi University on Wednesday. About a dozen protestors, who were in the audience, suddenly rose to their feet and began waving black flags and shouting slogans as soon as Singh started his speech, interrupting him for a few minutes as per agency report. The protestors alleged there was "intellectual pollution" by the human resource development ministry. Police then swung into action, catching hold of four activists and thrashing them with batons before dragging them out of the venue. Later, Singh made light of the incident, saying the handful of protestors were undermined by an attentive audience. Asked for his reaction to the slogans accusing his department of "intellectual pollution", Singh, without taking anybody's name, wondered who the guru was (of such pollution). He was apparently referring to the previous BJP-led NDA government. Superintendent of Police Richard Lakra said that the detained ABVP activists were arrested.
