Space Science Institute gets Rs 75 crores in budget MIL/Agencies, Mar 1, 2007. New Delhi, March 01. 2007 - Heeding the call of space scientists to groom talent, the government yesterday allocated Rs 75 crores to set up an institute to train students in the space technology that will be functional in the next academic year. The government also hiked the allocation to the Department of Space, which plans to launch its maiden moon mission next year, by Rs 861.6 crores to Rs 3858.6 crores in the general budget presented in Parliament on Feb. 28. The budget has earmarked Rs 75 crores to set up the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, which will train space scientists to carry out various Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) programmes, as per the Hindu. Based in Thiruvananthapuram, the institute, expected to be functional from 2007-08 academic year, would offer graduate and post-graduate courses in space programmes and technologies and related areas and also have provisions to carry out R&D activities. Expressing concern over the talent crunch at the space agency, ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair said that they require roughly 300 engineers every year and expected that the institute would help meet half of that demand. The budget also marks Rs 50 crores for initiatives for achieving targets to undertake the first human space flight by 2014. The initiative includes developing an orbital vehicle to carry crew to low earth orbit and safely return them to earth. The budget also has an allocation of Rs 96 crores for Chandrayaan-I, India's maiden lunar mission, scheduled to be launched in March next year. Nearly half of the Rs 861.6 crore hike in budgetary allocation to the Department of Space has been earmarked to improve the satellite launch vehicle technology.
