Match referee should have final word on calling off a tie: ICC
MIL/Zee News, Jan 27, 2007.

Dubai, January 27, 2007 - The International Cricket Council's (ICC) Chief Executive Committee has recommended the final decision on the termination of a match should rest with the ICC match referee.

The recommendation, coming in the wake of the Oval Test fiasco, will be considered by the ICC board in South Africa in March.

"The members of CEC have recommended an amendment to the ICC playing condition that relates to law 21.3 ('umpires awarding a match')," said a press release issued by the ICC after the commiittee concluded its two-day meeting in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.

"They have recommended that the final decision in relation to the termination of a match should rest with the ICC match referee. This recommendation will be considered by the ICC board in South Africa in March," it said.

The Oval Test events were discussed at length by the executive board at its last meeting held in Mumbai on November 3-4 last year and one of the recommendations approved by the board was that management should prepare a paper for the CEC meeting, evaluating and reviewing the role of the match referee.
