Kaun Banega Crorepati, Shah Rukh Khan steals the show MIL/Agencies, Jan 24, 2007. January 24, 200 - Actor Shah Rukh Khan has taken over the hot seat at Kaun Banega Crorepati from actor Amitabh Bachchan. And it is yet another entry of a big star into television. Money is supposed to have been the biggest draw for big stars towards the small screen. Huge and dizzying numbers are paid to them simply because TV advertisers want the appearance of the big name in their programmes. The question that was brought up by Sagarika Ghose on CNN-IBN show India 360 was: With Shah Rukh Khan hosting a Prime Time TV show, can big stars be as successful on the small screen? On the panel experts were managing director of Synergy and also one of the producers of Kaun Banega Crorepati, Anita Kaul Basu, creative director of A, V Sunil and TV actor, Rohit Roy. One doesn’t hear of big Bollywood names including Al Pacino or Robert DeNiro becoming chat show hosts or quizmasters, then why were Shah Rukh and Bachchan drawn to television especially Kaun Banega Crorepati? Citing that it was a complex question, Basu said that the Indian television industry and the one abroad couldn’t be compared. “An environment is fostered for anchors in the TV industry abroad. People are trained to be actors unlike how it is here. However, we do have anchors coming into their own now. But now television is a big draw for stars. They are getting to millions of people by the flick of a switch. Also, advertisers are funding for projects like ours which can only result in being big money spinners for them,” she said.
