Sachin Tendulkar vice captain of Indian team
MIL/NDTV, Jan 18, 2007.
January 18, 2007 - BCCI Selection Committee Chairman Dileep Vengsarkar said on Wednesday that in an ideal world the vice-captain is a future captain, but that may not be the case with Sachin Tendulkar.
"Ideal thing that I feel is that a vice captain should be a future captain. That is always the case. If you see the previous vice captains that we have had, they have not been certainties in the team," Vengsarkar said in Mumbai.
Asked if Tendulkar's appointment will continue for the World Cup, he said: "We have not appointed him as yet. I think we will go by each series and I have told him that as well. Then we will see how it goes."
However, Rahul Dravid has no reason to worry right away since he has been named the captain till the World Cup.
"The vice captain has a role to play in the team, but use Sachin as a sounding board all the time. It is good to have Viru or Sachin as a vice captain," Dravid told reporters in Nagpur.
Dravid's more immediate problem is sorting out the team combination - the first of which is deciding on which of the four openers out of Sourav Ganguly, Robin Uthappa, Gautam Gambhir and Sachin tendulklar will open the innings.
