U.S. eyes troop 'surge' in Iraq
MIL/Africa Mideast, Dec 18, 2006.
Washington, December 18, 2006 – Now Tens of thousands of more U.S. soldiers may march into Baghdad in a last-ditch effort to stanch the sectarian bloodletting tearing Iraq apart, but it's a risky strategy that provoked sharp divisions yesterday. Plan to deploy up to 40,000 more soldiers divides Democrats and Republicans alike
As U.S. President George W. Bush grapples to find an exit strategy from an increasingly unpopular and perhaps failed war, even his toughest Democrat critics were grappling with the possibility that more troops may be needed in the short term.
"If it's for a surge, that is, for two or three months and it's part of a program to get us out of there as indicated by this time next year, then sure, I'll go along with it," said Senator Harry Reid, who will be majority leader when the new Congress is sworn in next month.
Yesterday's television talk shows were brimming with debate over exit strategies from Iraq and especially suggestions that between 20,000 and 40,000 more U.S. soldiers might be sent to Baghdad.
