Indo-US Nuclear deal has extraordinary advantages?
MIL/Interview, Dec 12, 2006. Nitin Raj
California, 11 December, 2006 - Indo-US deal has created a serious controversy among many political parties in India and some of them have demanded to reject the deal. I approached Dr. Raj Baldev, Cosmo Theorist from India, and also Chairman of National Integration Assembly (NIA), who supported the deal in the NIA meeting on Monday.
Dr. Raj Baldev, Will you please comment or answer some of the questions on Indo-US Nuclear Deal as appeared in Hindustan Times dated 11 Dec. 2006?
Nitin Raj: How much MWe does India require?
Dr. Raj Baldev: India is facing starvation of energy; it cannot cope up with the present demand, which is increasing skyhigh. Its deficit shall go on increasing with pace of time and that shall seriously affect the progress of the country and that it cannot afford. India therefore needs to install 40,000 MWe of new nuclear capacity by 2015.
Nitin Raj: How Indo-US nuclear deal can help India to meet its energy requirements?
Dr. Raj Baldev: There is no doubt that the recently cleared Indo-US nuclear deal can help India to a great extent, India can generate more than $100 billion business with companies such as Areva SA, Eletricite de France, GE and Westinghouse Electric Co as per international reports and that is a great plus point for India.
Nitin Raj: What is the total present electricity system in India?
Dr. Raj Baldev: The total present electricity system is nearing 1,24,000 MWe of which the coal comprises 55%, natural gas 10%, renewable 5%, hydroelectric 26% and the nuclear makes up by about 3% of the total.
Nitin Raj: What is India’s present deficit of power supply?
Dr. Raj Baldev: As per available data, about 8% is the present deficit of power supply and 12.5 per cent at the peak hours. India can maintain this by 2031 in case it grows its primary energy supply by 3 to 4 times and electricity supply by 5 to 7 times of the current consumption and that is not possible for various reasons.
Nitin Raj: How many nuclear reactors generate nuclear energy worldwide?
Dr. Raj Baldev: There are over 440 nuclear reactors in operation in 31 different countries and some more are under completion. They generate about 15 to 16% of the world’s nuclear energy.
Nitin Raj: How much additional generation capacity India needs by 2012?
Dr. Raj Baldev: India needs to add about 100,000 MW as additional generation capacity by 2012 to meet its growing shortfall.
Nitin Raj: Why India is justified to get Indo-US Nuclear deal?
Dr. Raj Baldev: Since India is rapidly running out of coal and its domestic oil reservoirs and moreover oil that is imported by India is highly expensive, so it has taken a wise step to go for nuclear energy not only to make up its own growing deficit within 50 years but would also be able to have surplus to supply other countries.
Nitin Raj: Do you think that Opposition is right in demanding the rejection of Indo-US Nuclear deal?
Dr. Raj Baldev: No, not at all. The US has already assured India that it would honor all commitments and no clause shall be against the interest of our country, so I don’t see any reason why the Opposition has made it an issue against the Govt, who is doing great service to the country to bring it at the level of a super power.
