The ruling Congress party won 32 of the 55 seats declared in Arunachal Pradesh, as counting of votes continued Monday. "This victory is for good governance and stability and the Congress always stood for these two," Chief Minister Gegong Apang, who is tipped to continue in the post, said.
Elections to the 60-member state assembly were held Thursday. The main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to win six seats while independents pulled off surprise victories in at least 13 constituencies.
Senior Congress leader Mukut Mithi is equally keen to stake his claim to the chief minister's The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), an ally of the Congress, won two seats and the regional Arunachal Congress one seat.
