Trial date of US soldier announced MIL, Oct 7, 2004. A former US soldier, Charles Jenkins, 64, accused of deceiving his own country for North Korea will face a court martial on 3 November. He was in North Korea for nearly 40 years before giving himself up to the US in September. Mr Jenkins faces trial for defection and other charges, though family members said he was kidnapped. The case is closely watched in Japan, because Mr Jenkins' wife, Hitomi Soga, was one of five Japanese abducted by North Korea and freed in 2002. Mr Jenkins has never explained how he ended up in North Korea. But in the eyes of the US military, he is a deserter still on active duty.
