JERUSALEM - Israel and the Palestinian Authority are trying hard for a deal to haltthe army's Gaza offensive in return to put an end to militants firing rockets into the Jewish state, Israeli security sources say.
Security officials on both sides have taken the few initial steps, which are expected to speed up in coming days, the sources said on October 5.
The new bid to restore normalcy came after U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said America hoped Israel would quickly suspend its major military offensive in the northern Gaza Strip without taking the operation further.
A senior security source said Israeli officials were wary of the ability and willingness of Palestinian security services to confront Hamas militants. "Their record in this area is not good," the source said.
Israel’s Gaza campaign started after a Hamas rocket attack killed two Israeli toddlers in a border town on Wednesday. Since then, 67 Palestinians and three Israelis have been killed in and around northern Gaza.
