Mumbai - Apr. 22 - BJP General Secretary Pramod Mahajan, who was shot by his disloyal brother Pravin at his Mumbai residence, is reported to be in a very critical condition and the next 48 hours are crucial for his life.
The doctors attending to Mahajan said he received three bullet injuries that damaged Mahajan's liver, pancreas and the vein that returns blood to the heart. The bullets went through his chest into his abdomen. Along the way they shattered his liver, pancreas, and intestine. The bullets have not been removed yet, as doctors claim that extraction of bullets could worsen the conditions.
The Doctors attempted to repair deep internal injuries, as there was heavy loss of blood. Even though major bleeding has been stemmed, there is still some internal bleeding.
Twenty-five bottles of blood were given to 57-year-old Mahajan and he has now been shifted to the ICU.
Neighbours including BJP leader Jaywantiben Mehta said there were indications of a heated argument before gun shots were heard.
"I heard some male voices arguing and came out to see who was quarrelling. I saw Pramod Mahajan's wife going down crying. Listening to the gunshots I had a sinking feeling," said Jaywantiben Mehta. The former Union minister was immediately rushed to the Hinduja Hospital after the incident. Senior BJP leaders including L K Advani, Venkaiah Naidu and Ananth Kumar cut short their poll campaigns and arrived at the Hinduja Hospital.
