Democracy in Nepal likely to restore soon: Karan Singh
MIL, Apr 20, 2006.

King Gyanendra granted audience to Karan Singh, India's special envoy to Nepal,  at the Narayanhity Royal Palace on Thursday. They had direct talk for about an hour at 11 a.m. discussing the political upheaval and imbalance prevailing in Nepal due to takeover the administration by the King.

Before the discussions started with the King, Karan Singh handed over a letter of Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh which contained certain suggestions how to restore the democracy in Nepal and also the offer of possible assistance as desired by the King to help ease the situation. As a result of his talk he said, "Democracy in Nepal likely to restore soon".

Karan Singh also held separate meetings with Nepali Congress (NC) President Girija Prasad Koirala, CPN (UML) General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal and NC (Democratic) President Sher Bahadur Deuba on Wednesday evening.  Mr. Singh apprised the journalists about the results of his meeting with the King as well as political leaders of Nepal. However, he has expressed his strong hope for an immediate amicable solution to Nepal's crisis.

He met Rastriya Janashakti Party and former Prime Minister Chairman Surya Bahadur Thapa at his residence on Thursday morning and discussed the existing crisis.

Mr. Singh had arrived in Kathmandu on Wednesday afternoon. Indian Foreign Secretary Shayam Saran was also present in Kathmandu as part of the Indian 'mission'.

India has regularly been urging the King to reach out to the political parties and return to democratic process at the earliest. India has promised to give Indian military assistance to Nepal as usual after the solution is arrived at between the King and the political Parties. This aid was suspended after the February 1, 2005, when the King took over the administration of the Government.
