Guwahati: As ULFA militants joined Bodo militants and carried out a series of attacks for the second successive day, killing another 13 in as many attacks. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told New Delhi to mount pressure on Dhaka and Yangon for ‘‘immediate dismantling’’ of ULFA and NDFB camps in their territories.
Five persons were killed in a busy market place at Gauripur in Dhubri district bordering Bangladesh this evening, the NDFB had lost at least seven members since yesterday. Four army men were killed and their vehicle was damaged in a powerful blast in Upper Assam's Tinsukia district. Two other blasts damaged an oil pipeline at Sonari in Sibsagar district. Dealth Toll in these two neighbouring states rises to 67.
The series of violent attacks which includes bombing and gunning down people that have rocked Assam and Nagaland since 2nd October is a clear indication that the militant outfits are not interested in opening negotiations with the government.
Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil pledged all support to North East states to combat militancy.
Officials said "maximum alert" had been sounded in the areas where the NDFB was active. Additional security forces had been deployed and security along railway tracks intensified following apprehensions that the militants could target trains.
