Serial bomb blast in the Northeast, five blast in Assam and two in Nagaland, and militant attack claimed 48 lives on Gandhi Jayanti. Bodo militants are prime suspects for the attack in Nagaland though security agencies are yet to ascertain the responsible group.
Two simultaneous explosions rocked Dimapur at 9:35 am, one at the railway station and the other at nearby Hong Kong Market, leaving at least 32 persons dead which includes school children, women and a railway employee.
In Assam, militants opened indiscriminate fire from sophisticated weapons around 5 pm at a weekly market at Makrijhar close to the Bangladesh border. claiming 11 lives on the spot. 2 more persons were killed in a grenade attack at Abhayapuri in Bongaigaon district while militants also lobbed grenades at Baihata Chariali police station in Kamrup district and Jagiroad police station in Morigaon district around 5:30 pm. While three persons were injured in the Baihata Chariali attack, two policemen were hurt in Jagiroad.
Earlier today, suspected NDFB (National Democratic Front of Bodoland) militants triggered off a bomb explosion at Shantipur village market under the newly-created Chirang district, which killed 2 person and injured 6.
Assam Police officials say the NDFB, which has been demanding creation of a sovereign Bodo tribal state, is suspected to be behind all the five incidents in Assam. In this context, we should also make a note that on Thursday Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had offered to declare a ceasefire against the NDFB and ULFA from October 15 if both the groups agree to stop violence and come forward to the negotiation table.
Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio, who rushed to Dimapur within two hours of the blasts, described the incident as "unfortunate" and added that his government would leave no stone unturned in fighting the menace of terrorism. This is the first big explosion in any public place in Nagaland in the past one decade. Rio also set up a 3-member enquiry commission which will submit its report within 10 days.
