Tourists stop to visit Nepal due to protests against the King
MIL/Agencies, Apr 16, 2006.
Kathmandu, Apr. 16 - Nepal's anti-monarchy protests, spread throughout the state, has adversely affected the tourist traffic particularly in Kathmandu, where no tourists are seen visiting the historic places. On the contrary, there were hundreds of people moving in-groups in streets chanting slogans against King Gyanendra of Nepal.
Some of the people were so angry that they burnt the Govt. property wherever they got a chance. The question of tourists is, therefore, out of question now. Tourists seem to be scared in view of protests and demonstrations being held in Nepal. Some of the tourists who were to visit Nepal got their flights cancelled.
Protests are being held everywhere. Different political parties gave a call for nationwide strike. The journalists also protested and demonstrated against the King Govt., more 20 people including journalists were detained during the protest.
Police is reported to have arrested four people during the protest in the Thamel district, a maze of alleys full of backpacker hotels, bars, curio shops and trekking and travel agencies which is a magnet for most tourists entering the country.
Since Sunday is not a holiday in Nepal, many people could be seen walking to work down Kathmandu's main thoroughfares, as per Reuters. "We will burn the crown and run the country," youths shouted as they danced around burning tyres in the centre of Thamel. "Death to the government."
