West Indies won the 2004 ICC Champion Trophy
MIL, Sep 25, 2004. Sports Correspondent

London: Brian Lara's West Indies held their nerve to beat England in a dramatic Champions Trophy final on Saturday and lift their first major one-day title for 25 years. A most famous victory that has come decades after the flamboyant Caribbean dream was shattered by the Indians in the 1983 World Cup. But just like India were the dark horses in that tournament, so were the West Indies in this one. Both won from positions where no one had given them a chance.

West Indies have won the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy defeating England by 2 wickets in the final today. Chasing a target of 218 for victory, West Indies reached the target in 48.5 overs. West Indies came back from the dead to scamper home to their first title triumph in more than two decades with a nerve-wracking win over England.

Tailenders Ian Bradshaw (34) and Courtney Browne (35), to their credit, refused to go off when offered the light and put together a 71-run unbroken ninth-wicket stand to seal an unlikely victory with seven balls to spare. Both recorded career-best one-day international scores.

Bradshaw was awarded the Man of the Match award while Ramnaresh Sarwan has been named the Player of the Tournament for his consistent performance in the ICC Champions Trophy.
