A "significant step forward"

New York: After their meeting, both the leaders agreed to work together to restore “normalcy and cooperation” and seek peace in the issue of Kashmir.
Manmohan Singh and Pervez Musharraf meeting for the first time on the sidelines of UN General Assembly session agreed to implement “confidence building measures”.
Prime Minister said, "I sincerely believe that today is a historic day. We have made a new beginning and I feel confident that despite the difficulties on the way that President Musharraf and I will together work and succeed in writing a new chapter in the history of our countries.”
Musharraf said he hoped the meeting augured well for Indo-Pakistani relations.
Both the leaders reiterated their commitment to continue the bilateral dialogue to restore normalcy and cooperation between India and Pakistan.
The possibility of natural gas pipeline via Pakistan also came up during the discussion.
Giving a pleasant surprise to Singh, Musharraf presented him a painting of his native village in Pakistan, an album of his childhood friends and a report card from the village school where Singh had studied before migrating to India after the partition.
External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh, National Security Adviser J N Dixit, Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran and other senior officials were present at the meeting. The Pakistani side comprised Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri, Information Minister Sheikh Rashid and National Security Adviser Tariq Aziz.
