Sikh community lodges protest against U.S. Federal law
MIL/Agencies, Apr 1, 2006.
The Sikh Coalition, a US based organization has staged an open protest against the U.S. that they should not forcibly get the haircut of a Sikh gentleman lodged in their prison.
Satnam Singh, who is currently in a federal jail, may have to go in for this makeover after he is transferred to the Florida State System Jail on April 9.
The community demanded that U.S. Federal law, which particularly empowers the authorities to get the haircut of a person against his will, may be a Sikh gentleman, should be amended or changed to grant exemption.
The Sikh community protested that every true Sikh has a religious faith behind maintaining his original hair in its primary status and that United States should, therefore, respect the culture of the Sikh Community and avoid forcing the Sikh gentleman to get his haircut. They have also addressed a petition to Florida Governor Jeh Bush, Secretary Department of Corrections, James Mcdonough and Deputy Secretary of Corrections, Laura Bedard, to stop federal authorities from forcibly cutting the hair of Satnam Singh and removing his turban.
