Pakistan to treat India at par with Saarc countries

Islamabad  - Pakistan has agreed to treat India at par with other Saarc countries under the South Asia Free Trade Agreement (Safta) with effect from Ist July, this year as per Pak official sources.

The Indian counterpart, SN Menon, Shah revealed while briefing the press reporterson the first day of composite dialogue on economic and commercial cooperation here on Tuesday.  He said, "Pakistan has ratified Safta and the instrument has been deposited with the Saarc Secretariat at Kathmandu."

Pakistan would not, however, initiate trade with India under Safta, but would continue trading under the existing bilateral regime, Shah said the minister meant that Pakistan has ratified Safta, adding the regional agreement would be fully implemented with all member states, including India.

Shah said he is not satisfied with the volume of Pakistan's exports to India because of the non-tariff barriers and high tariff rates. However, he was satisfied with the outcome of talks on non-tariff barriers and standards.
