Bibi Jagir Kaur new SGPC chief

Amritsar: Bibi Jagir Kaur, of the Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal, was today elected unopposed the president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Commitee (SGPC), amids boycott by the rivals, Panthic Morcha in the first meeting of the General House of the Sikh religious body held in Teja Singh Samundari Hall here.
The meeting was Presided over by the Amritsar Deputy Commisioner Raminder Singh, as per the Sikh Gurdwara Act, 1925. Her name was proposed by former Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal and was seconded by Mr Harsursinder Singh and Mohinder Singh Ramana.
Imediately after the proposal, all 33 members of the Panthic Morcha stood up and walked out saying they were against the election of Bibi Jagir Kaur who, they alleged, was a killer of her daughter.
Mrs Jagir Kaur among others is facing trial as an accused in the murder of her daughter Harpreet Kaur, 19, in a Patiala Court.
The SGPC controls a budget of more than Rs 200 crore and manages historical shrines and educational institutions of the Sikh community all over the country.
