UN Council gives final call to Iran to suspend UE Activities
MIL/Agencies, Mar 30, 2006.
United Nations - The U.N. Security Council has unanimously called on Iran to suspend uranium enrichment activities (UEA) positively within 30 days and cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency to avoid a strict action. Iran's U.N. ambassador, Javad Zarif, said in retaliation that Iran had an "inalienable right" to pursue nuclear energy and told reporters, "we are allergic to pressure and intimidation."
The United States among other nations accuse Iran of building nuclear weapons, while we have clarified several times that Iran is only developing the area of civil energy.
France, Germany and Britain have been trying tried their best for the last two years aiming to resolve this issue by diplomatic way but nothing concrete has happened. There is an absolute failure from all sides due to Iran's rigid stand.
Even Russian proposal is beaten, no results could come out despite assurances from both sides given from time to time. They feel that it is the stubborn stand taken by Iran, and the five permanent members of the council should deal with the matter.
According to a presidential statement written by the British and French ambassadors, Wednesday's vote came after the five permanent members of the council reached an agreement on the document.
French Ambassador Jean-Marc de la Sabliere said. "It's a strong message we're sending to Iran -- that Iran has no other option but to comply with the resolution and the requests made by the board of governors of the IAEA,"
According to CNN, talks between Iran and the EU-3 -- Britain, France and Germany -- stalled in January when Iran began small-scale uranium enrichment and ended its voluntary cooperation with the IAEA, which had been conducting surprise inspections.
The United States and European Union demanded that Iran should reconsider its decision, but Tehran accused the West of holding it to higher standards than it does the rest of the world.
The situation has become serious now and Iran has no other option but to take some positive step of extending cooperation as desired by the UN. Council.
