ICC Champions Trophy: West Indies storm into the final
MIL, Sep 22, 2004. Sports Correspondent
Southampton: The West Indies registered a convincing seven-victory over Pakistan to romp into the ICC Champions Trophy final, where they will take on England on Saturday. Ramnaresh Sarwan led the charge with a well-compiled half-century (57) as the West Indies won the second semi-final with more than 20 overs to spare. West Indies chased the target in just 28.1 overs after bowling out Pakistan for a mere 131 in 38.2 overs.
Earlier today, having won the toss, Captain Inzamam decided to bat first on a pitch renowned for favouring the chasing team. As a result, their batting line-up choked - 131 all out – in an poor display of batting which left their bowlers little to try to save the set target.
The highlight of West Indies' assault was Wavell Hinds's two wickets in four balls. He first tempted Inzamam to edge behind for 21, and then trapped Moin Khan lbw before he had scored to leave Pakistan reeling at 112 for 7.
Only four more runs had been added before Corey Collymore gained reward for pitching the ball up at Naved-ul-Hasan, who was bowled for 0 (116 for 8). And duck was next on the menu as well, as Collymore shattered Mohammad Sami's stumps (125 for 9). Shahid Afridi mounted some brief resistance, but his lone stand was cut short as Browne stumped him neatly from Chris Gayle's flighted tempter.
Last 7 wickets of Pakistan Innings could score on 31 runs!
Ramnaresh Sarwan, the man of the match, top-scored with 56 not out. Replacing Lara at the post-match awards ceremony, he said: "Brian is resting in the dressing room but don't worry, he's going to be fine".
