The Indian media acts as a monster, says Actor Aamir Khan MIL/Agencies/NK.Com, Mar 25, 2006. New Delhi: The media in India is a satire of what it should be, said Bollywood actor Aaamir Khan. Speaking to Tehelka, on the state of Indian media, he said that despite the expected media interaction that Rang de Basanti's release demanded of him, he couldn't bring himself to deal with "this monster that the media had become". Breaking several months of silence after the media criticised his film Mangal Pandey, Khan said he let Rang de Basanti ride on its inherent strengths to become a blockbuster. Known as thinking man's actor, Khan in the interview cited stories from a wide range of channels and newspapers dwelling on the debasement of the medium and its message. He said it isn't just the cynical decimation of the professional or the intrusion into the deeply personal (his marriage) that irked him, but the misplaced emphasis on the sensational. "Because they want more ads, they are destroying what is a very important part of society, and that's news reporting. It's wasting important national space that should be used in a more productive manner," he said. He said, in his opinion "news reporting is a matter of national concern". Khan said a general and growing disillusionment with the newfound priorities of the mainstream fourth estate has provoked him to start keeping the media off-limits. The present state of affairs calls for the Press Council to sit up and take notice, if not go in for legislative intervention, Khan said.
