1446. US scientists bag Nobel for medicine

Two US scientists, Richard Axel, 58, of Columbia University in New York, and Linda B. Buck, 57, of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle bagged the coveted Nobel Prize for medicine October 4 for revealing odor-sensing proteins in the nose and mapping how they communicated with the brain.

David Politzer and Frank Wilczeck the America trio won the 2004 Nobel Prize in physics on October 5 for discovering and exploring the force, binding particles inside an atomic nucleus.

October 02: Serial bomb blast in the Northeast, five blast in Assam and two in Nagaland, and militant attack claimed 48 lives on Gandhi Jayanti. Bodo militants are prime suspects for the attack in Nagaland though security agencies are yet to ascertain the responsible group.

1459. Haiti’s storm death could cross 2000 mark

Haiti: The death toll from flood has already taken 1,070 lives but it could cross 2000 mark according to government sources. Rescue workers recovered 1,013 bodies from the floodwaters, mud and collapsed homes in Haiti’s third largest city of Gonaives, 58 bodies have been recovered from other areas. 80 per cent of the city is still under water.

1460. Second US hostage killed

The second one of the three hostages kidnapped by a militant outfit has been executed, after a 24 hour deadline lapsed yesterday. A message posted on one of the militant’s site claimed the responsibility. "The sons of our nation have slit the throat of the second American hostage after the deadline passed [on Tuesday] and we will provide you with pictures soon," the message said.
